review 1: Before reading this book, I had my own misconceptions of Rasputin---The Mad Monk of Russia. Through-out the book, even though I already knew what was coming, I was really routing for Rasputin to find his humble origins again and not to drag the Regime down with him. I was also furious at Nicholas, who kept turning the other cheek! There are so many "I wanted him to..." and "What if he, she, they did/did not...". I think he really did try, but greed and fame got the better of him, as it does to many good people. The writing flowed and kept me intrigued throughout. It was a book that I couldn't put down and finished it in two days. It has also interested me in other aspects, most notably, mesmerism and spiritualism. I think it has to do with those eyes---they are quite distu... morerbing, even in these old pictures.
review 2: Somewhat disappointing, I'm afraid. Rasputin's story could be fascinating while seem in the context of contemporary Russian educated society's fascination with prophets coming from the people. That includes avid interest in sectarians as well as in artists who emphasized their peasant (Esenin, Kriukov) or worker (Gorky) origins. The author, to my regret, chose to simply tell us about Rasputin. This is simply not enough. After all Rasputin is mostly interesting not by himself, but as part of the context. less

Interesting new info but it's written like a (very dry) textbook.
