review 1: Joshua Ferris's new novel is actually three books rolled into one, and unfortunately it's not a good thing in this case. The first 50-odd pages are breezy, the jokes work well and there's a sweet sense of melancholia. Trouble begins once the religious hullabaloo and the never-ending baseball jargons start pouring in. The protagonist here is an atheist and my already dwindling faith in religion gets further strengthened with this book. For if there's a God, then how does this get longlisted for the Man Booker? If you too feel impatient midway, try skipping to the last few pages; the Epilogue is so wonderfully written that you'd hope the rest of the book matched up to it.
review 2: This is similar to Ferris' "Then It Came to the End," in that it starts off a a hi
... morelarious comedy-of-manners but then ends up as a somber reflection on human nature. The main character, Paul, is a too-tightly wrapped dentist with a dour outlook on the world. He finds someone is imitating him on the Web to evangelize over an obscure religion that espouses the value of doubt over faith. So as he investigates this identity thief, there is a lot of musing on the nature of religion. Being dentist can turn one sour of life, evidently, given how they can see the firsthand effects of decay and human neglect. less

I loved the audio book. Campbell Scott provided perfect deadpan and I laughed out loud throughout.

Hated it. Not badly written, well written. But hated it all the same.

What was this doing on the Booker shortlist? So boring.
