review 1: Special Exits is well, special. It has charm, wit and just about everything I could look for in a graphic novel. With that being said, the topic is a very hard one to take in and fully appreciate unless you've been in this type of situation. Our story follows a elderly couple who both know that they're old but are really just clueless about the whole thing. This is important because it tells the readers that we're probably not going to figure out how to become immortal and that it's okay. There's grief, loss and an overwhelming amount of emotion that follows and by the end you're probably going to end up a lot more depressed than you were on the first page. The special thing is is that you know what's going to happen all along and yet you still keep reading hoping that it ... morewon't as though your thoughts are going to change the whole course of an already written comic. Joyce Farmer made these characters all too real and she deserves praise just for that.
review 2: This one will stick with me for a while. A haunting, touching, beautifully illustrated & verbally told story of her taking care of her elder father & his wife through their aging & dying process in South L.A. That fantagraphics published this proves they're not just for hipsters. everyone should be so honored & strong to know their parent(s) at this stage of life & death, and we as readers should feel honored that she shared her (and their) story. less
