review 1: This was surprisingly readable, and very interesting! In parts, she spends a little too much time on gossip, but overall I think she did a good job of pinning down the critical points in each woman's life. The women themselves certainly led incredible lives, though a few of them (Diana Cooper and Nancy Cunard) were also pretty similar. I thought that she tried a little too hard to weave the stories together, and was a little on the fence about how the book was broken up. But she covers a lot of ground here, and really captures an era. I found some of the things these women endured to be incredible, and was also surprised by how little certain things they dealt with had changed. The author does a great job of placing these women in historical context and I'd recommend... more this to anyone who likes biographies and history. My fave was probably Tamara de Lempicka, but I learned a lot from each of these women.
review 2: I received this book through First Reads on Goodreads in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed this book, very much. It was a little difficult to get involved with at first, but once I started reading about women with familiar names-I began to enjoy it a lot more. It also dispelled a lot of illusions I had about the ”flapper era"-these 6 women had a lot more substance to them than the women you think of in a Fitzgerald novel-& his wife Zelda, is one of the 6 discussed in the book. The book follows these women through the war, shows what they did to survive, & each of them had a talent, be it writing, art, acting, or dance. I found them all to be very interesting. less
