review 1: I picked up this book in part because I wanted to know more about why the Sabbath isn't such an important part of American Christianity anymore. I had a hard time finding books to answer the question, and so I was quite excited to find this one. Shulevitz does provide an answer of sorts to this question, and many I didn't even know I had. If you want to learn more about the history of Sabbath observance in Judaism and Christianity, from ancient time to the present, this is a good book to read. Did you know there were Transylvanian Christian sects so dedicated to the Sabbath they eventually tried to convert? That the practice of the Sabbath gave us the seven-day week? I did not. Shulevitz also writes about her own interaction with the Sabbath, and shares some modern philoso... morephers ideas about the Sabbath. If this is a topic of interest to you, this is a good book to pick up.
review 2: Judith Shulevitz's meditation on the Sabbath is an unusual combination of autobiographical anecdotes, biblical exegesis, and historiography. It is hardly an academic text, though it was nice to run into Ulrich Zwingli for the first time since AP European History. It is not a personal spiritual narrative. Rather like the Sabbath itself, Shulevitz's text ambles along leisurely and enjoys tangential experiences, allowing the reader time to reflect on the curious cultural manifestations of God's commanded day of rest. less
