review 1: This book was a quick read with a rather uneven writing style. I would say it is a piece of local color for those from the Milwaukee area who remember Pandl's restaurant and are interested in the family who owned it, most particularly the patriarch George Pandl. It also seems to serve a cathartic function for the author, Julie Pandl, the youngest of the nine children of the family, in relieving her grief at the loss of her parents. In general, the book is rather strange and unfocused.
review 2: ...No. Just no. I noticed the book got a pretty good score here and on Amazon, and I thought I'd check it out. Big mistake. Not interested in the family structure. Really don't care about the author's teenage angst about having to move schools and how she hates her brothe
... morer. I found the opening rather disturbing, about how she had to work in a kitchen at the age of 12. Not as horrendous as other things she could have been made to do, but I honestly could not see what was the appeal of the story.I also really wasn't interested in her father's illness and death. I couldn't find much sympathy for George, nor was I really interested in the author excising her personal demons and guilt. Quite frankly I found the book to be total drivel.Skip it. less

A fun memoir to read if your family owned a restaurant like mine did!
