review 1: I first heard Kambri discuss her upbringing and relationship with her father in Fall 2013 on Keith and the Girl. Her story stayed with me long after the episode ended and I knew I had to find her book. It did not disappoint--it was a raw mix of both heartbreaking moments and the laughter Kambri shared with her family when life was seemingly good. I admire Kambri so much, not only for what she has survived, but for the wisdom and perspective she gained in the process. I highly recommend this memoir for its insights into the Deaf community, dysfunction, and above all, perseverance and the imperfect, difficult, and at times uneasy love that exists in every family.
review 2: Most readers likely have never considered what growing up with deaf parents might be like.
... moreAdditionally, the probably would not think of how complicated family life would be if they, the children, were deaf while their parents could hear. Kambri Crews effectively describes how this childhood played out for her and her brother. She allows readers a glimpse at the mostly private deaf community, a place where she didn’t really fit but her parents did. Crews shares childhood memories that readers will connect with and some they will not – pranking parents on purpose knowing they would never be able to hear what was happening around them. Crews sometimes has the unfair position of spokesperson for her parents because she is intelligent, can hear and can better communicate with others. Her childhood is unique and she presents it in an interesting manner so that readers will want to learn more. One of the unexpected benefits to this memoir is finding out about the unfair discrimination deaf people face and how troubling that could be for the child of one of those people. less
