review 1: Stuff I Read – Chi’s Sweet Home Vol 4So once again I plunge headlong into the adorable world of Chi. At the end of the previous volume the Yamada’s had found a pet-friendly apartment to move into, so this volume deals largely with the move. And, really, this is more about Chi not understanding what is really going on. Chi might know something is different, but takes quite some time to learn that where they move to is their new home. The rest of the volume is taken up with meeting the various neighbors in the apartment complex, including the pets, and some brief interactions in the new surroundings. Really this volume feels more of a transition than anything else. It takes Chi from the old apartment to the new one, and introduces a number of new characters. It shows C... morehi’s confusion and distrust of the new environment, and feels genuinely cat-like in how it portrays everything. And it does move the development of Chi along, although not a great deal. Chi is exposed to new things, new creatures, but doesn’t grow as much as a cat than in the other volumes. That said, this volume is definitely filled with the same adorable kittenness of the previous books, and that alone makes it funny and cute. Chi is a hilarious character, and how her views of what is happened differ from the family’s view is a source of great humor throughout the series and especially this volume, where the family is treating the move like it is completely natural and an improvement from before while Chi, who didn’t know of the ban on cats in the previous building and who doesn’t recognize the new surroundings, has a more difficult time adjusting. The scenes of Chi rubbing all over the apartment were hilarious, as Chi claimed everything as hers, allowing her to feel comfortable in the new place. This is, once again, Chi having to learn things on her own, to discover through trial and error rather than leaning on the advice of older and wiser cats. Which is interesting and a lot of fun to see. It is fascinating how the artist and writer portrays the instinctive catness of Chi, how the species traits come out even without training. And far and away the area with the most potential introduced in this volume is with the neighbors. Here we see another cat, this one much more snobby, it seems, and definitely fluffy. There is also a bird, which is hilarious, and a bunny, who is cute and who might get some lines eventually. Then again, maybe not. Last is the puppy or small dog, which provides the most comic relief in this volume. It is hilarious to see the dog from the prospective of a cat, and especially a puppy to contrast again Chi’s being a kitten. How Chi will come to view these creatures should be interesting, and I have a feeling that the next volume of the manga will be filled with mostly that. Which I have no problem with, as it was one of the best parts of this manga. The way that the differences and similarities are shown between Chi and the other animals are rather subtle most of the time, and make a kind of statement about cats in general or perhaps pets in general. And at the end of the day Chi is still fun, and while part of the newness of the volume seems a little artificial, as it stems largely from just moving to a new area, it is the first time this has happened and, as long as this doesn’t keep happening even couple of volumes, I can forgive it. Indeed, it is a nice way to widen Chi’s horizon, as Chi couldn’t really interact with other pets at the old apartment. So this does seem like a natural growth in the development of Chi. And while some of the jokes are very similar to those we have seen before, it is still an endearing series that remain completely enjoyable. For my money I can’t think of a cuter series. So for this latest volume of Chi’s Sweet Home I give an 8/10.
review 2: Chi's Sweet Home Vol 1- 5 by Kanata Konami.Children's ComicChi is a mischievous newborn kitten who, while on a leisurely stroll with her family, finds herself lost. Separated from the warmth and protection of her mother, feels distraught. Overcome with loneliness she breaks into tears in a large urban park meadow., when she is suddenly rescued by a young boy named Yohei and his mother. The kitty is then quickly and quietly whisked away into the warm and inviting Yamada family apartment...where pets are strictly not permitted. Chi then has a splendid time living with her new family, learning about different things and meeting new people and animals. (Amazon)I absolutely loved the series! Suitable for children aged 7 to 12 years. Very popular among girls. Ideal for cat owners or anyone considering getting a kitten/cat. Being a cat owner myself, I can relate to the experiences; particularly Chi being separated from her mother and siblings, being adopted by a new family and settling into a new home as was the case when I got my kittens, now cats.
