review 1: I picked this up at the library because the topic sounded fascinating, but unfortunately, this book didn't quite live up to my expectations. The author kept switching back and forth between time periods, which just kept getting more and more confusing as I got deeper into the book. Someone placed a hold on the book at my library, so I wasn't able to renew it -- I had to return it. I wasn't upset that I never finished it. It was one of those books with great potential that never materialized.
review 2: Geez the more you read about old hollywood and certain characters, the more insidious the whole thing seems. The parasitic relationship between mother and daughter is quite disturbing in this, and there's plenty of murder and mayhem to go around. I would have pref
... moreerred that it went in more of a chronological order, and I didn't much appreciate the to-ing and fro-ing of the different times in Gypsy's life. As someone who understood Gypsy from the Bette Midler tale, it would have been a bit easier for those of us with limited knowledge to follow if it wasn't so choppy. less
