review 1: All the academic documentation, footnotes and sourcing don't really disguise the fact that this is as breathlessly written and paced as any romance novel. The shadows of the night that retreat to reveal a fugitive's face! The black silks swirling around her graceful limbs and a bag of gold around her neck dragging her under as a beautiful widow drowns in the pounding waves! I like women and the Civil War and romance novels, but was only mildly taken with this.
review 2: An engrossing read, but the writer makes slips in her narrative which betray her unfamiliarity with certain aspects of the period - referring to a woman peering up from beneath her bonnet when in fact the style of bonnets worn at this time did not shade the face, discussing women buying hats whe
... moren hats were not commonly worn in this time period, and elaborate descriptions of underpinnings which were not actually the style worn during the Civil War era. It was not surprising to read in her acknowledgements that she didn't know much about the war before she got the idea for this book. She states that this is nonfiction, but her narratives read like novels. This makes them highly readable but does make me question if they are factual or fanciful. less

The book started with promise of being a great book to read; but fizzled into a history report.
