Hell's Belle
review 1: 2 1/2 stars. Poor execution of a decent storyline although nothing about it struck me as being truly original. Nina was born half human half vampire. She started exhibiting some strange abilities. That whole storyline was wrapped up way too quickly. It should have been spread out over a couple of books to amp up the mystery about what was going on with her. Nina and her friends were all part of a secret, elite government team that cleans up supernatural messes. It was explained that she got training for her job. Yet throughout the story she seemed ignorant about most supernatural creatures. My main issue was that more character development was desperately needed. Nina was the only one whose personality and history was truly explored. It felt like everyone else was just the... morere without getting a sense of who they were. I don't regret reading this, but it definitely wasn't memorable.
review 2: I received a free copy of this book with the intention of leaving an honest review.I found this to be a quick read but it was interesting. I read it in one sitting as I was sucked in straight away. Nina's life is interesting to say the least. She's half vampire and until now thought she was half human too but it turns out that she's really half witch too. Her mother and father were murdered and she has been raised by a secret group known only to the head of the D.O.D.There is some parts of this book that seem familiar, as if I've read them in a different book but that could just be because I read a lot. Then parts of the story are rather intriguing too, like the haunted hotel that people still stay in and the fact that a lot of information about her life has been kept from her. With the help of her vampire friend Frankie who is secretly in love with her, her familiar Dog, her aunt Babe, Dr O and an FBI agent, she has to track down and kill an ancient vampire who is targeting witches. There is non-stop action through-out and some very witty banter too. I would recommend this to anyone who likes urban fantasy and I will be looking out for any follow up book by Karen Greco. less
