review 1: Well, for me, this is now a series to be read. This is the 3rd volume in Kasey MacKenzie's "Shades of Fury" series. There was deepening interest after I read volume 2, "Green-Eyed Envy," and this book fulfills the promise and justifies the interest I had in V2. I find that what KM has accomplished here is well above and beyond the standard for this genre. This is a plot full of twists and turns and is so well written that even this slightly jaded fan of this genre was truly surprised at the revelation of the true identities of the traitors among the various characters and clans we've come to know over the first two books.KM develops her characters with ease, has a well-developed sense of snarkiness, and can pull the reader into an exploding action scene so well, that the r... moreeader may be tempted to twist, turn, duck and/or take other evasive action. What I think the greatest accomplishment here is that KM shows that any god's power comes from the faith of believers. She demonstrates that while also showing that the same "god", exists in many cultures and over time, only the name changes across time and culture. By setting this groundwork, this foundation for her alternate reality (I WISH Boston was this much fun), she has opened the door to plot possibilities wide. While coming to a gratifying conclusion, this book also grabbed me with the potential for the coming volumes. I assume there will be volumes because KM has just begun to explore the world she has created. I await the next volume with pleasure-filled anticipation. Highly recommended - start with book 1: Red Hot Fury.
review 2: I really love all the covers of this series. Riss's leave of absence doesn't end up going so well. There is actually a line in the book that explains it best, She is now taking a leave of absence from her leave of absence. I was looking forward to seeing Riss with her niece now that she is a fury so I was kinda sad that that was put off until later.Riss and Scott are still very much together and happy, they don't really have any alone time with each other but they are still a great team and still growing their relationship together. There was a lot more mythology added into book 3, more gods and goddesses are introduced into the book and new situations fill the pages. I expected the bad guy to go down at the end but I was totally shocked by all the events that made it happen and the outcome of Marissa completing her task. I know that the new situations certain people find themselves in at the end of the book will bring plenty of action and excitement in future books.Like the other book in the Shades of Fury series BLACK-HEARTED BETRAYAL is filled with action and suspense. Riss and her allies hardly have room to breathe before the enemies are on them again. I thought that there was a lot more brought to the table compared to book 2 and I hope that it continues with book 4. less
