review 1: I read this one for high school book club, and I have to say I found it difficult to hang in there. Not because it wasn't good, but because the protagonist is an OCD mess, and it was hard to hang out inside her head. The whole thing made me anxious…which means the author did a good job, because provoking in the reader the same emotions in which the protagonist is wallowing is the goal, right? But this one…a bit too much! I think I'll go read something sweet or simple to recover.
review 2: Penelope (Lo) Marin is a seventeen year old girl with OCD. She and her family are dealing with the death of her brother from a drug overdose. Her family is completely broken; her father has drowned himself in work and her mother has become almost catatonic in grief. Lo ... morefinds herself in a strange neighborhood when a bullet comes close to killing her. She finds that a young stripper named Sapphire was killed and the bullet that almost hit her was one of the ones that killed the young girl. Lo feels that she and Sapphire are connected and wants to find out what happened. This leads her on a journey through the darkest parts of Cleveland and one of danger and peril. She meets a young man named Flynt and is drawn to him but feels he may be involved in the murder. This was a very good book and the plot had a lot of twists and turns. The characters were very well written. The rituals of OCD are well described and you can feel the frustration Lo feels when she must walk in patterns and do certain things before she enters a room, even when there is danger and the ritual could lead to her own murder.
