review 1: Kate Mayfield's Dad started a funeral home in the small town of Jubilee, Kentucky. In The Undertaker's Daughter Mayfield writes about growing up in a funeral home. She writes about the funeral business, her family, her experiences and the interesting characters in her community. This was a story about death, growing up in the south, family secrets and dysfunction. Mayfield has written a charming story about life in the 1960's and I wanted to love it but I didn't.   Thank you, Netgalley.

... moreis book -- as much as a good novel. Mayfield recounts the first 20 years or so of her life in a small town in Kentucky. It is as much a story of Mayfield's own life as the daughter of an undertaker growing up in a funeral home as it is a story about the southern US in the 60's and 70's. In a way, Mayfield's story is the conventional story of a girl who discovers that her beloved father is not as perfect as she thought and can't wait to leave the stifling environment she lives in. But the details of the setting and Mayfield's strong personality which comes through in her confident narrative style made for a very engaging read that was hard to put down. Highly recommended! less
