review 1: Very interesting memoir - a combination of the author's experiences learning Hindi in India, and explanations of neurological and psychological research on learning a second language. I learned a lot about India (especially Hindu nationalism and conflicts between Hindu and Muslims) and the benefits and of speaking two languages - and the difficulties in learning another language as an adult. There are also some interesting insights into deaf culture in different countries, and sign language in India.
review 2: I chose this book as I was traveling in the region around Udaipur and the author was based in Udaipur as she was learning Hindi. I love learning languages, so the concept of this book was fascinating to me. The author weaves her own story of struggling th
... morerough the language (at first) with theoretical knowledge of language acquisition. So the theory was good, but in reality the flow of the book was somewhat stilted. The author's own anecdotes are good, and the research into language acquisition is great, but together the flow didn't work for me. The book did, however, help me learn some Hindi which was useful. I still recommend the book for Hindi learners, or for those traveling to Rajasthan who want a taste of the colour and history of this region of the world. less
