review 2: I would recommend Boost to anyone who likes basketball. I would give this book five stars because it was exciting, had great detail, and was suspenseful. This book was about a 14 year old girl named Savvy, short for Savannah. But Savvy isn’t short at all, she’s 6’3” and still growing. She moved to her aunt’s house from New Mexico, and is now trying out for the elite Fire basketball team, which is an age bracket above the one she’s supposed to be in. Boost is about how her family deals with their move from New Mexico, and how Savvy has to become stronger in order to play on the Fire team. I would recommend this book because it was really exciting; it made feel like I was there watching the game and getting all excited when they scored. Also, it had amazing detail and I could picture what was happening. The last reason I would recommend this book was because it was very suspenseful. I was on the edge of my seat and couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. The first reason I would recommend this book is because it was really exciting. I would get so enthusiastic like I was really there cheering the team on. One example of when the book got really exciting is when Fire scored the winning basket against the team Power in the preseason jamboree. “I looked left and found Gonzo exactly where she was supposed to be-sneaking along the baseline. She stepped right, drawing her guard up the lane. Then she reversed sinking a pretty layup. The horn blew ending the game. Fire 31 Power 30.” I got so excited during this part because the Power team is really mean and sometimes play dirty and fouls the girls on the other team when the ref’s not looking. I wanted Fire to win so badly. Another example of how exciting this book was came during another game against Power in the regular season. Gonzo made an awesome play to get Goggles, a really mean girl from the Power team, to foul out of the game. “The power guard stayed on her but Gonzo wouldn’t pass off. I realized what Gonzo was up to when she took Goggles straight on. Gonzo took a jumper but Goggles blocked the shot easy. Easy and clean I thought, but Gonzo flew backward legs splayed. The whistle blew. “A winning performance,” I said as I helped her up. Gonzo grinned and went to the line. Goggles went to the bench with five fouls.” I was so happy Goggles fouled out because she’s very mean and stuck up.The second reason I would recommend Boost is because it had great detail and I could picture what was happening. My first example is when Savvy tried to play defense on her friend Gonzo during a scrimmage. “In the dribbling drills, Gonzo slipped ghostlike through any wall the defense could put up. I was more like a fly in a spider’s web, getting tangled with each move I tried to make.” I could just picture Savvy running into the defense every time she tried to dribble into the basket. Another example is when Savvy goes outside with Gonzo to shoot hoops and the boy she likes walks out and she feels self-conscious. “Marc Sardakis and a couple other kids crossed the adjacent court, heading our way. My tank top was soaked through with sweat and stained with lime sports drink. My hair was knotted on the top of my head, making me look two inches taller than I already was. After a hard practice, I stunk like the inside of a trash can.” I could picture Savvy standing there with the hair on top of her head.My third reason for recommending this book is that it was suspenseful and kept me on the edge of my seat. For example, Savvy got mad that her drug test wouldn’t come back for a week and she couldn’t play the next day. “A week! But I need the test done like tonight! I want to play tomorrow.” “This kind of test is done by a specialty lab,” Dr. Anna Chiamara said. “They won’t pick up the specimen until Monday. Dear me its Columbus Day weekend. The driver won’t come until Tuesday. The results will be back about a week after that.” I was so worried that the test would come out positive when I knew she hadn’t taken drugs. Another example of when it was suspenseful was when a cop showed up at Savvy’s house one day. “After school I was surprised to find my mother home. I’d seen enough cop shows to know the blue sedan next to her car was an unmarked cruiser.” I was so nervous because I didn’t know why the cop was there. I was worried that Savvy might be in a lot of trouble.I really enjoyed reading Boost because it was so exciting and suspenseful. I hope if you decide to read it you love it as much as I did. Thanks for reading. less
