review 1: As I read in another review of this book, I was intrigued with the beginning of the book and held high hopes for the story. Unfortunately, I felt the telling of the story wasn't executed as well as it could have been. There were 4, more or less, subplots that were eventually tied up nicely together, but the characters weren't well developed and didn't elicit any emotion from me (except one character). Since the story is basically a love story (on various levels), I feel it should have elicitted more emotion. Fewer characters and better character development would have helped.
review 2: I had been wanting to read The Aviary Gate for a long time, but instead ended up reading The Pindar Diamond first as I picked it up at a book swap shelf. Not sure if it really is... more meant to be a sequel. Either way, it's put me right off reading The Aviary Gate now or any other novel by Katie Hickman. I really didn't enjoy the writing style at all, right from the start. But I thought I'd continue and see if the story had potential. But I had no idea what was happening in this book for most of it; and worse still, really I couldn't have cared less. It felt for the first half like someone had dropped several different manuscripts, and the pages had gotten mixed up! Plus I either disliked, was annoyed by or just felt nothing for any of the characters. All I can say is, thank goodness this was a relatively short book! less
