review 1: One Hen is about a young boy named Kojo who comes up with a plan one day that he intends to follow through on. His story begins by Kojo going to the market to buy one hen with a small amount of money he loaned from his mother. Over the next couple of months, Kojo keeps a few eggs for him and his mother to eat and sells the rest. He eventually makes enough profit to pay his mother back for her loan and then he goes on to buy more and more hens and sell more and more eggs. The rest of the book follows his life as he makes enough money to go back to school, gets a scholarship to go to college to learn about farming, and comes back to his hens to end up creating the biggest farm in all of West Africa by the time he’s a grandfather. I would definitely recommend reading this b... moreook in classrooms grades K-2 to show kids how one boy made his whole life starting with something so small.
review 2: Can't wait to share this with my kids. I had no clue how micro loans actually worked, and this book managed to blend a ton of information with a compelling story. The mixture of text sizes makes this book accessible to a broad range of readers, even if they're not ready for the more technical parts of the text. Wonderful and in no way condescending. Also, I've loved pretty much every book I've read from Kids Can Press. less
