review 1: Although Lilly Lapp has loved Jacob Wyse for years, Jacob had his heart set on marrying Sarah. On Sarah's wedding day to the vet Mr. Grant, Lilly's buggy breaks down on the way to the wedding. She is drenched from the rain storm walking to a near by barn. Inside the barn, Jacob is there he has been shot and beaten trying to save a horse. Lilly tends to Jacob and promises to create a situation where she can get Jacob secret medical treatment. In exchange Jacob gets Lilly some of his mom's dry clothes. As they arrive at the wedding, everyone is very curious why Lilly is not in her own clothing and Jacob to protect her, tells everyone they are getting married in 3 days. Can Lilly go through with this marriage knowing Jacob is in love and heart broken about Sarah? What kin... mored of life will they live? Mixed into this story is severe depression (Lilly's mom) and how it is handled in the Amish community. There is mention of autistic behavior in one of Lilly's students which poses a challenge in a one room schoolhouse situation with multiple ages. Sarah's one marriage dream was making a wedding quilt with the women in the community. This is a very special project for brides to be. Sarah will miss this opportunity with a quick wedding. But she is given the opportunity in a very unconventional way.I liked this book. In the beginning I had trouble putting it down but something happened to me towards the end and I felt blah. That was why I gave it 3 stars. My favorite quote from this book was said by the Bishop marrying Jacob and Lilly."I'd like to raise the point that God doesn't care if you are happy but he does care if you havejoy."....."Happiness is fleeting, dependent on the moment, the circumstances, even the weather. Butjoy is transcendent, enduring and in the Biblical context, is not an emotion. Joy is an attitude of the heart. Joy brings us peace, a refuge in the midst of troubles.God gives us joy through the Holy Spirit. But the enemy tries to steal your joy and give you temporary happiness instead." This is what I like about Amish fiction...the thought provoking comments.
review 2: Wow. This was really good. I never expected the story to be so deep and relevant and romantic. It certainly wasn't perfect by any means, but I read it in a little over two days and hated to put it down. I don't usually care for Amish set stories, but Long's story is grittier and more real than the ones I've read in the past. It was tastefully tantalizing, and I definitely want to read more of Long's books! less
