review 1: This is a wonderful tool and guide for helping younger minds grasp Shakespeare and understand his works as well as how to memories important passages easier. My son (10) and I enjoyed reading through this book and trying out the suggestions although he was not as thrilled as I was. We will re-use this book a few times during the summer to refresh his memory. This would be a great tool to use if you homeschool or just enjoy giving your kids a boost. We received an ARC in exchange for an honest review through Blogging for Books. This in no way influenced our opinion.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book because of what it taught ME about Shakespeare, and I'm excited to - one day - teach my children. Ludwig's enthusiasm for Shakespeare is contagious! I do think i
... moret's a little unrealistic to expect kids to memorize some of the longer passages that he recommends, and I found that I often had to tell myself that this will be a marathon, not a sprint. I don't have to do this all at once. I looked for a lot of small ways that I could bring Shakespeare into our house - small quotes I could pepper my conversation with, just to get them interested. My kids are thoroughly obliging, but I think I would feel pretty guilty sitting them down and making them memorize so many huge speeches, so I'm going to start a lot slower, perhaps, than Ludwig recommends. The only other part that gave me pause was Ludwig's complete, utter adulation for Shakespeare's work. I can't think of a single sentence in this book that talks about a negative aspect of Shakespeare's writing. It seems to me that Ludwig thinks every line of every play and sonnet is pure perfection, when I would have appreciated hearing that maybe he could have done better on some things. No author or playwright is perfect, and I found myself doubting Ludwig's reviews after awhile. Polonius talks about balance, and though Ludwig quotes him, I don't think he followed the man's advice. All in all, I loved it. I think it was an excellent idea for a book, and very well executed. I loved having the pictures sprinkled through it, too, so I could have a visual for some of the characters. Well done! less
