review 1: I liked reading it until I didn't. I found the small town society charming and stifling in equal amounts which sounds about right. The protagonists's refuge in alcohol was off putting if realistic. Miss Rita's role as muse while wearing a t shirt that reads "I am not your magic negro" is problematic. Now that I think of it, with the one leg and the whiskey in the nursing home, she reminds me of Walt Longmire's sherriff mentor. Not quite recommended.
review 2: Father Steve Sibille has come home to Grand Prairie Louisiana to take charge of St Peter’s Roman Catholic Church. Among his challenges are teen altar girls, sleep-inducing confessions, and the daughter of the former priest, whom Father Steve finds very attractive. Then there’s Miss Rita, an African-Am
... moreerican centenarian who once worked for his family and who demands that he supply her with whisky and cracklins (against doctor’s orders, of course). When a Pentecostal preacher arrives in town, threatening to lure Father Steve’s dwindling flock to his “more exciting” church, Father Steve decides to fight back with a festival that will rally the congregation and keep them loyal to St Pete’s. Before long he’s wondering how things got so far out of hand. This is an enjoyable debut featuring the kinds of quirky elements that draws me to this kind of Southern fiction. Quirky characters? Check. Preposterous situations? Check. Politically incorrect assertions? Check. Sexual innuendo? Check. Happy ending? Check. Wheaton has everything from a bombastic preacher to an elephant in the mix – including one of the most outrageous BBQ cook-offs I’ve ever heard of. I’ll admit that about a third of the way into the book I was beginning to wonder if it was going anywhere I wanted to go, but I needed it for a challenge so I kept on going. After the half-way point I really got caught up in the outlandish plot (and it IS outlandish and ridiculous) and wanted to find out what would happen. The Catholic school girl in me was a little put-off by the way the Church (and, especially the priesthood) is treated, but once I got over that, I found that I enjoyed the book. It’s not great literature, but it’s a nice diversion. less

Just awful. I stopped after a few chapters and tore it up for the recycle bin.

Laugh out loud funny, irreverent (and possibly offensive)...
