5 Scary Books to Read Before Halloween

October is a time for crisp cool mornings, beautiful fall colors, and Halloween! It’s also my birth month, so October has a lot of great things! For this month, I’ve decided to write about five horror novels I have read that left a spooky impression on me. These novels may not be a part of the “classic” horror genre, but I felt they belonged on this list.

These books should be read with the lights off, late at night so they can be experienced the way they were meant to be. After reading through my list, let me know what your favorite horror books are! I need some new ones to read!

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon – Stephen King

I am not a huge fan of Stephen King, but you can’t have the word horror without Stephen King. This is the only book I was able to thoroughly enjoy without having to take a break from it. It’s a fairly short book (for King) and it will definitely give you the creeps. Being alone in the woods is scary enough, but when someone or something is stalking you, it’s a nightmare.

The Bird Eater – Ania Ahlborn

The Bird Eater was a Kindle First book for me a few years ago. I took a while to begin it because it just didn’t seem that interesting to me. Once I started, I couldn’t stop…until it got too creepy for me to read late at night. I love birds, but the way Ahlborn depicts them will give you the chills. I ended up finishing this book during the day because I was having nightmares from it at night.

The Picture of Dorian Gray – Oscar Wilde

A classic title is a must read, and The Picture of Dorian Gray does not disappoint. While not an outright horror novel, the themes and madness that the words depict are terrifying. In modern society, this novel still holds up and there is a reason behind that.

The Metamorphosis – Franz Kafka

Another classic story, Kafka sends chills through his readers by depicting the loneliness of his main character. What would happen if one day you woke up in a different body and everyone around you was horrified by your appearance? After reading this novella, I was left in awe, both at Kafka’s writing and the thought of how this transformation to Gregor happened since it was never explained in the book. That’s the chilling part. It was something that just happened.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark – Alvin Schwartz

This collection of short stories spooked me as a young child. I loved anything R.L Stine, so this book seemed to be the next best thing once I finished the Goosebumps series. Do not be fooled. Even as an adult, some of these tales still freak me out. The artwork is haunting and will be in your nightmares for a long time.
