review 1: This was an interesting book. It relates stories that are not the ones that are usually included in history books. There are a total of six stories in this book that I knew nothing about. For instance, Queen Isabella insisting that Columbus bring pigs with him on his voyage. Then there were the stories of horrendous violence between Native Americans and settlers. Then there are the stories of wine-making French Huguenots, who were here before the Pilgrims, a young, inexperienced George Washington who made mistakes that ended in murder and started a war.The story of Benedict Arnold is well known but the story of Shay's Rebellion is not.One thing that is very clear from reading this book is that respect for the lives of others is a relatively new concept. I found the boo... morek interesting but again troublesome.
review 2: A lot of interesting stories about early U.S. and colonial history.Mr Davis added meat to the bones of stories that are often told in history classes, ie George Washington early life and what may have lead Benedict Arnold to change sides as well as stories I was unfamiliar with such as Hannah's escape and the regulators in North Carolina. The stories do not follow a chronological order in their sections. Almost a stream of conscious pattern in that some of the writing is like he tells you a story with limited details and then retells the story adding details the second time. less

Very interesting although I don't know how "hidden" some of it is. Enjoyable and informative.
