review 1: A fairly good biography of James Madison, covering mainly his role in writing the Constitution through the end of his presidency. Definitely dry at times - I think the author assumes you have significant knowledge of the time period already, so if you don't, you might find yourself a little confused at times, struggling to remember who's who. I haven't really read anything about this period in American history since high school, and at times I was lost. I came away knowing more about James Madison, but without feeling like I really know him in any real sense. I understand the author wasn't trying to make a comprehensive biography covering Madison's personal as well as public life, but I think if he had included at least a bit more detail about James Madison as a human bein... moreg (and not just as a politician) it would have gone a long way.
review 2: His accomplishments as a statesman are amazing. This book, however, would have been much too dry to finish if I had not read so much about the history of these times already. Madison's personal life and childhood are barely discussed at all. We see what he wrote and thought, but he appears to have done very little else. I'd like to learn more about Dolly Madison. She appears the more interesting of the two. less

I wanted a book on Madison the man. What I got was Madison the politician.
