review 1: America seems to be in love with amateurs, and this book follows suit. Kevin Roose, a college student at Brown and nominal Quaker, enrolls in Liberty University for a semester. Under false pretenses he learns all about the Jerry Falwell style of evangelical Christianity. This is an interesting look at evangelical society, but Roose spends almost no times on basic Christian beliefs. Instead, he eats around the edges by discussing hot-button social issues like abortion and same-sex marriage. Nowhere do we read what it was like for him to read the Bible or wrestle with Trinitarian theology. This is written exclusively for a non-religious crowd, and as such I didn't find it all that enlightening.
review 2: I thought this was a really interesting book. Roose transfe
... morerred to Liberty University from Brown for one semester for the purpose of having a totally different kind of educational experience. He describes what he found - both to like and not - in easy-to-read prose. He is surprised by how much he likes the people he meets, and he tries to understand their worldview, which is so different from the one he was raised with. While his parents, relatives and friends fear for what may happen to him, he finds himself enjoying himself more than he expected. He knew going in that he planned to write about his experiences, and finds it hard to keep journalistic distance with people he comes genuinely to like, and to whom he does not want to lie. His descriptions of the classes he takes (especially the one which tries to explain young earth creationism) are really good. An easy and very interesting read. less
