review 1: This book started off really well, and I like it as a whole - but there were long periods of time where it moved at a glacial pace. The premise of the book was incredible! I loved the idea of chaos in art and the exploration of just how resilient children are (how far do they bend before they break?), as well as the way the author examined Caleb's detachment from his kids. Sometimes however, I felt myself wishing that everything would speed up a bit.Great book overall, but not a page-turner.

... morereen. In fact, if I had to find a fault with "Family Fang", it would probably be that it reads a bit, shall we say, cinematically? Like the author occasionally slips more into screenwriting mode than novel mode, because he knows it will be made into a Wes Anderson- style film someday? There do seem to be some heavily "inspired" Anderson moments throughout, and even a little sampling of "Arrested Development" (the man-boy named Buster yelling out "I'M A MONSTER!" after he's been disfigured from a freak accident? Yeah...). But all in all, well crafted and enjoyable. less
