review 1: I learned three things from this book: Afghanistan and Pakistan are in big trouble, I don't want to live in either place, and I need to stop reading memoirs. (Actually, the king of Jordan's memoir was quite good, but I suspect it was exceptional). This book was enjoyable, thanks to the style of the writer, but a lot of it was far too personal for my taste. Using the metaphor of food, my previously read book "The Balfour Declaration" was a four course meal, and this book was a side of french fries.
review 2: Journalist's adventures covering Afghanistan and Pakistan between 2004 and 2009. She starts as a gung ho adrenaline junkie anxious to be in the most dangerous areas (she embeds with US military seven times) and then rushing off to interview top politicians.
... moreBut things change. In the background of this noise is her chaotic personal life in which several relationships founder and where her newspaper the Chicago Tribune heads toward bankruptcy. In 2009 the Tribune demotes her and she quits, unthrilled by the prospect of heading the metro desk. Must have been well written I bashed through it in a few days. less

Very entertaining and educational. I can't resist a book with a dry wit and a travelogue.

An easy, entertaining refresher course on the last ten years in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Bleh...I'd say more if I thought it was on any of my followers radar. Don't recommend.
