Over this past summer I was rooting around in a storage room in my basement and came upon my old vinyl record collection. I had thought about selling them since they were just rotting away in the basement for the past 20 years. But when I saw them I thought let’s get them out and see how hard the years of sitting in a damp storage room had been on them.
Much to my surprise they weren’t as bad as I thought. A few of the album covers that didn’t have a high gloss finish had a bit of mold on them but they didn’t appear to be warped or not playable.
So I go them out, clean them with some mild Murphy’s Oil Soap and a very soft rag and voila I had a vinyl record collect of approximately 300 albums at my disposal.
There were a number of albums I was looking for as I was going through the cleaning process. Albums that I recalled spending numerous hours listening to and enjoying I was now anticipating listening to again.
But as I was taking this trip down the vinyl memory lane I came across a number of albums I forgot about until once again seeing the cover.
I thought I’d take a few moments to share my ten favorite vinyl albums that I forgot. These are in no particular order, just ten great albums that had skipped my mind over the past 20 to 30 years.
Notable Performers – Steve Cropper
This one was a cut out – what a find.
Another great cut out find. I really like these Cold Blood albums. I can’t believe I forgot about them over the years.
Another cut out. Kids if you don’t know what a cut out album is ask anyone over 50 they should know.
This was her debut album.
Notable Performers – Randy Newman, Tom Scott, Michael McDonald, Steve Gadd, Jeff Porcaro, Willie Weeks (How’s that for a debut album.)
Notable Performers – Jeff Porcaro, Larry Carlton, Rick Derringer, Will Lee and Abe Laboriel (Farther of Abe Laboriel, Jr. one of my favorite drummers to watch live.) I’m pretty sure Donald Fagen could have whoever he wants on any of his albums. Sometimes even the best can’t meet his expectations.
Notable Performers – Steve Gadd
Again another great cut out find. If it’s not Scottish it’s crap!
Notable Performers – Ricky Skaggs, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Don Everly
This is one as a kid you didn’t admit you liked. I was into rock and here is this sex symbol for mothers who’s playing Vegas, but I loved this album. This copy is actually one my wife got me at auction. I have another copy but I literally played the grooves off of it on the old mono record player I had as a kid.
Notable Performers – Steve Ferrone, Ray Davies, Eric Clapton
Everybody’s Doin’ It
There are numerous other great albums in my collection but these 10 are ones that time forgot until I pulled them out, dusted them off and dropped the needle. I’m so glad I never sold or gave away my vinyl collection.
