review 1: An important topic, for sure,but this book never really grabbed me and pulled me in. I felt like I was being held at a distance from all the characters, so it was hard for me to empathize with them. I also found it unrelentingly depressing. I know this is a very traumatic thing to have to go through, but I would have liked to see a little more triumph and happiness. Just a glimmer, which we really don't get until the last paragraph. And really, none of the characters seem happy.

Fu captures the bottled up thoughts of the long suffering and how it can break someone down enough for them to live numbly through the daily graces and accept that they will never be free. Definitely a good read. I had some dry moments, but mostly kept my attention when I haven't been able to read a whole book through until the end since getting off of ADHD medication. less
