review 1: It's more like 2 and 1/2 stars. I liked it, but at the same time, there are so many things about this book that I just didn't like. I liked the heroine - Kate a 40 year old woman, who most of the life was very intelligent, independent & successful, who finds herself desperate for money, unhappy with where she is in her life but determined to change it. What I didn't like about her is, that if she was so intelligent how come she did no research of any kind before and during her great quest to find a wealthy husband. She was so obsessed with Scott, yet she didn't try to find anything about him. All she had to do is search his name on the internet - she did nothing. Because of that she proved her self very stupid and naïve. I also liked Griff - he was the best part of this s... moretory. A sexy man with a secret. A true gentleman.Scott did not surprise me at all. I did not think that a wealthy, successful man would wed anyone especially so quickly without doing a background check on them. So the "twist" reviled on the night before their wedding was not a great surprise at all. Just the opposite - it was exactly what I expected. What I didn't like the most about this book is the references to Jane Austen. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter were relevant to each chapter, but overall this book did not in any stage could be compared to Pride and Prejudice. It was missing the class, the sophistication and most of all the glamour & respect. The bottom line is that Kate was willing to sell herself and have sex for money. She did that numerous times before she realised that what she is looking for is love. Kate would compare herself to Elizabeth B, yet Elizabeth from the beginning knew that she will never marry without love.
review 2: I really struggled to decide whether to rate this a 1 or 2 stars. I landed on 2 stars because I read it to the end. A friend gave it to me because she thought I would "relate" to it which makes my emotional response to the book much higher because I DID NOT LIKE THE MAIN CHARACTER AT ALL.I will start with the one positive I found - the premise was interesting. A just turned 40 year old single woman sets out to research writing an article on a Jane Austen manual for marriage. That is all I can say in a positive way about the book. The writing was okay, but it talked down to me as a reader a lot. The author gave really long and poor descriptions that I ended up jumping over to get back to what felt relevant. What I really didn't like about this book was the main character. In fact, I would say I hated the main character, Kate. She was a jerk, she was shallow and she took advantage of her family and friends. The author tried to explain it away by the death of her grandmother and her reaction to grief. We all react differently to grief but when someone responds consistently the way she did through out this book, I questioned the state of her character BEFORE the grief. The plot was predictable and nothing was a surprise or made me curl my toes in anticipation. I could rant all day about the book, so I will stop here. less

This book is not challenging in anyway, but it was a nice diversion for a couple of hours.

Truly awful. Not worth reading even for the passing references to Austen.

Very typical chick flick novel.
