review 1: I didn't relate to the characters and had a hard time getting into the story. Our main character takes time off to recover after a terrible accident. She gets involved with a family who has to many troubles to list, and at the same time comes to terms with her own past/background. I could see how the story was going to end, but was surprised by the turn one characters ending took. Not much was explained why this happened, or maybe it was and I just didn't catch it. I to went to the internet to hear some of the "Sacred Harp" music, eh, not for me.
review 2: This book was not what I expected, but I was immediately drawn into the pages. I felt the pull of Damascus (both the river AND the girl!) and the hollow places in the hearts of the characters and Kimberly do
... morees a brilliant job of projecting that hollowness on the house itself. Although this book didn't end the way I would have chosen, I closed the last page accepting the fact that it may not have been able to end any other way than how it did. And isn't that how life is anyway? Despairingly beautiful. Thank you for a story well-told, Kimberly. less
