review 1: This book does its job well. I hated reading it because of the horrible events happening, which were all true stories. The writer has a positive outlook that I just am not mature or good enough to possess after reading/experiencing humanity at its best, but more often at its worst in The Sudan.Throughout the book, she has some very candid words about God, and I'm glad for the lack of preachy nonsense:"I knew that voice was God, but I doubted Him. From where I sat, He seemed to be losing a whole lot more than winning, and that scared me.""Even in our church we didn't teach our kids about being a part of something bigger. We tried mostly to make sure we provided enough entertainment in their religion to hook them into our church so we didn't lose them to competition. Sometim... morees we feared the competition would be a boyfriend, other times a drug pusher, still other times another church."Smith's wrestling with faith was what made this book stand out to me.
review 2: A riveting read, couldn't put it down. Highly recommend. Here's what I liked and didn't like:Liked:1) Realism2) Honesty3) Many anecdotes about real people4) The story offers hope 5) Logical beginning, middle, and end6) Timely7) Informative--you'll learn a lot about places you haven't visited and cultures you'll like likely never come acrossDidn't Like:1) Overly repetitive--there were times when I wanted to scream at the writer, "So just tell us your secret already and quit repeating that you have one!"2) A lot of emotional hand wringing, which got old fairly quickly and worsened near the end3) Above all--and this is why I subtracted one star--too often ideas bounced from one thought to another without transition, often in the middle of a paragraph; a competent editor is charged to fix these things. This was the most annoying of the three weak points of the book.Despite the weak points, I would definitely recommend Ms. Smith's book. She has quite the story to tell. less
