review 1: I was given a copy of this book to review in exchange for an honest review. And, sadly, I honestly found it to be terrible. The writing is inconsistent but mostly terrible. The story was interesting at times but Lola Montez, like the writing, was also mostly terrible. I tried to appreciate the campiness of the story but it's terrible even for camp. In my opinion, there is nothing to recommend this book. Do yourself a favor & don't read it.
review 2: Oh, it was all right, I guess; I finished it. I think I kept waiting to see Lola provide some evidence of her intelligence -- mostly, she seemed to be a survivor based on chance and her willingness to exploit her beauty and sexuality. And I was kind of hoping (blush) that there would be some whips involved. I wa... mores in the mood for something a bit racy and this was about as racy as Forever Amber, with a much less resourceful -- main character. less
