review 1: Läste boken på svenska. Den var bra med tanke på att den tar upp hela Kofi Annans FN-karriär från start till epilog. Boken är helt klart kvalitet framför kvantitet vilket gör boken liiite segläst, fast hellre det än att liksom Carl Bildt i Uppdrag Fred bre ut allt i en fet tegelsten på 500+ sidor. Å andra sidan kan jag tänka mig att Calle B är en person som kan ha väldigt mycket att säga om det mesta. Personligen tycker jag att har man nåt att säga som är bra ska det kunna göras inom rimliga gränser och det gör Annan. Han både rosar, kritiserar och problematiserar på ett sådant sätt att man förstår hur det var att leva i hans skor på FN. Mycket intressant perspektiv, jag upplevde det som raktigenom ärligt. Han drog sig inte för att kritisera ... moreenskilda personer men å andra sidan gjorde han det med rätta.
review 2: The overall theme of this book revolves around the fact that the United Nations should work for the people, not the nations, of the world. Most of what Annan discusses - genocides, poverty, the Middle East - somehow involves this, with examples of how catering to nations in the past has often been destructive in terms of the individual. In that sense, this is a brilliant book that highlights problems while also offering solutions. It does come off as a bit dry at times, however, which is a shame because when Annan discusses his personal experiences - finding out about the Canal Hotel bombing/Sergio Vieira de Mello's death, for example - it's incredible. The dry, factual referencing of statutes, declarations, etc, is necessary I suppose, especially if you were to use this as a source for research, but as this is a memoir and not a history/poli-sci text, the details feel overwhelming. They're important, of course, but I was hoping to read more about Annan's life as secretary-general, not about things that at times sound like they're taken word for word from Wikipedia. less
