review 1: I read this and The Big Thirst in the same week - boy, am I depressed! Time for something light and fluffy.I related to the author's childhood memories, as she is only a few years older than I am. I had no trouble finishing the book but was not riveted. I did learn a lot of disturbing information. The book is well written. This was a great book discussion selection. There are many issues to talk about.
review 2: This is actually two books in one. Iverson’s personal memoirs of her youth and an investigative history of Rocky Flats. If you’re interested in the latter, you can skip through to chapter 4 and start there because the whole first half is about her growing up in the shadow of this plant where the locals thought they made cleaning supplies. She rides p
... moreonies and discovers boys. She chronicles her father’s alcohol abuse, but really doesn’t paint him as a true character good or bad. Her mother is a Stepford wife who is in denial about everything. Who am I to question why it’s reviewed so favorably, apparently people like it. But I know what I like, and over-descriptive prose and staccato dialogue in a non-fiction read isn’t it. It’s a good, middle-of-the-road read, but if you’re looking for insider info on what was really going on there, you’re going to get the same info from Wikipedia and Google’s news archives, with a smattering of what Iverson had for lunches with coworkers during the brief stint working in the plant as she put herself through grad school. less
