review 1: Once upon a time in the early nineties I read MANY of the Dear America series books. One of them was the Winter of Red Snow. Recently, I discovered that there was a sequel for this novel released in 2011 when I was about 22 years old. I am now 25 and I still have a lot of love for this series. Even though they are designed for kids they give a lot of insight on what day to day life must have been like for the different people (mostly young ladies) in different time periods. I still love historical fiction and have found that this series has some of the best research. This story features many of the characters of the previous novel and all of them sound like actual historical people and not fictional characters. The historical figures that are mentioned also seem very true ... moreto their real life counterparts. I don't care if I'm technically a grown woman, I still enjoy reading this series.
review 2: I own the first Abigail Jane Stewart Dear America diary, and I remember reading it over and over when I was in middle school. I was excited to notice this sequel on the library shelf, so of course, I had to check it out.I'd hope that my being older doesn't make me jaded. The one thing that irked me the most was how many people got lost/left behind/killed off, and the main character didn't really seem to mind. There were occasional comments like, "Oh, I miss her so!" or "I am guilty" or what-have-you, but it's not really believable. I remember that in the first diary, Gregory made Washington and Martha really come to life in a way I hadn't thought of before. Here, they sort of drift in and out without any personality. It's not awful, but I was dreadfully let down. less
