review 1: I just finished reading this book and I have to say I found it very difficult to put down. The author kept you interested and invested in the characters' lives. I cannot imagine how a young child could have possibly endured living in a sewer for as long as she did, with as little as she had and still managed to come out as she had.At various points, the author mentions her father's memoir. I only wish, though I am not sure if it already is, that it was published and available to readers. It would have been interesting to read about this ordeal from the perspective of someone who was responsible for the lives of his young family.Definitely a good read. I would like to watch the movie, but I recently learned that the movie was based on someone else's story and not their... mores, though the movie cover is the same as this book cover, so I am not sure how this happened.
review 2: I really hate it when book club books I choose aren't amazing, and this one just didn't do it for me. It took about half the book to get interesting enough for me to want to pick it up and then it was just flatline at pretty good. I wasn't captivated, and I think it had to do with the style of narrative. Details that I wanted just weren't there and while it was interesting, I just wasn't completely caught up in the people's survival. People were born and they died and I felt nothing. Maybe it was because it took so long for me to feel invested at all in the book, but that is bad news for a memoir. I'm so bummed it wasn't as good of a read as I wanted it to be! less

This book was excellent; unbelievable story of how a family survived during the Holocaust.
