A Mall Cop Mystery

review 1: An interesting first book in the Mall Cop mystery series. The author uses her military background as background for her protagonist, a retired military security police officer who has been wounded in action and is now downgraded to the position of mall cop. I enjoyed the interaction of the protagonist and the other characters, although the "real" police officers' characterization often felt cliched. There was too much going on in this book for my taste, from finding and returning missing reptiles that had been released from from the Herpes Hut, to multiple murders, and then the "mystery" surrounding Jay, the cookie entrepreneur who may or may not be a police officer himself. At times, the progress of the story seemed unfocused.
review 2: Having worked for y... moreears in a mall (albeit not security) I could relate to the setting. Although I am generally not a fan of stories told in 1st person, I enjoyed this this one enough (or the "voice" didn't bug me as so often happens) and I kept on reading. Will read book two. I can already tell, I might be bothered by potential love interests, which always seem so formulaic in this type of mystery. less
