review 1: This book is a page turner! I could not put it down. I found myself really caring about the characters. I am 34 years old, and I love YA fiction! There, I said it. The characters are charming, funny, interesting, and sincere. It is obvious that Laura Wettersten did her Ren Faire homework, because the setting is so authentically described. Without spoiling anything, I will add that the metaphorical language and aspects of the plot that seem to parallel one another are expertly crafted. Bravo!
review 2: This is another case of "I would probably have enjoyed reading this when I was 15". As a 25 year old, I realized the entire plot within the first 20 pages. However, I mainly didn't like the protagonist for the first half of the book because she is such an idiot t
... moreeenager, which makes her actually really realistic, so that was sort of cool. In a lot of YA the protagonists tend to be wise beyond their years, so it was interesting to see a 17 year old make very 17-year-old decisions. I also had an issue with the time frame of the story. This is supposed to be her summer job, but it only lasts a month. Summer, at least where I grew up, was 3 months. And she keeps saying things like "I've learned so much this summer" and I'm like, "girl, you've been there 2 1/2 weeks". After the first half I stopped nitpicking about the writing style and the protagonist's idiocy and just enjoyed the simple, formulaic story. less
