review 1: This memoir was reviewed in The Atlantic, which makes me hesitate to call it pornography, although the sex scenes are as explicit as anything I've ever read. The author was an abused child who tried to escape the horrors of her home through competitive swimming. A child of the 60s, she lost herself in booze and drugs and sex for several years. She faked her way into a writing workshop at the U. of Oregon taught by Ken Kesey, and remained his friend until his death. Ultimately she finds herself again through writing, and if not completely healed, she is far better off at the end than the beginning.
review 2: I've seen this happen with so many memoirs: Author lives a wild and interesting life; her story is amazing and addictive. Author grows up and develops a se
... morense of equanimity, which is detailed in the last few chapters of the book. Problem is, reading the part of the book describing a grown up person who lives a mature life is boring. Sort of a catch 22, I guess you need to eventually find that sort of insight to write a memoir, but it's super dull for the reader. less
