review 1: This was my first venture into Steampunk fiction, and despite really wanting to enjoy the book, I was left fairly unmoved. The novel takes a while to get started, with an opening set of scenes that seems entirely irrelevant to any of the rest of the plot. I didn't feel any particular emotional connection to the main characters, which meant I couldn't get very excited by their perils. On the other hand, I admired Schwarz's willingness to avoid the easy solution and happy ending.
review 2: I bought a copy of this book at a book signing with the lovely Liesel Schwarz in London. So glad that I decided to purchase this too! It's a heart wrenching read and at times I found myself wanting to scream at the characters. Lovely well written characters as usual. Schwarz is... more one of the best steampunk writers I have come across recently and her books have quickly become some of my favourites. If you fancy reading something a little bit different with feminism and zombie-like humans with clockwork hearts this will be right up your street. less
