review 1: Had I not already read Devil on her tongue, I probably would have given this book four stars. It is well written but I get the impression after only two books of hers, that Holeman's MO stays consistent. The lead character has a lifetime of struggles then at the very end their tormented life is tied into one neat little bow with a happy ending on top. I found this story somewhat predictable and was frustrated at how long it seemed to take for the expected outcome to occur. (And sadly not once was i surprised with any shocking twists or turns). I can appreciate Holeman's historical knowledge but I do enjoy some unpredictability and in this case holeman did not provide. I'm not inclined to read any of Holeman's older work but I will look forward to her next n... moreovel.
review 2: Either I wasn't paying attention in school (very likely), or I just never learned about the history of serfdom in Russia. This was all completely new to me. As with all Linda Holeman books I have read, it was full of really interesting historical information and incredibly unfortunate events happening to characters. She's such a great writer that I have the hardest time putting down any of her books once I've started one. The main character in this book wasn't all that likable, but I still found myself rooting for her and hoping for a happy ending. less
