review 1: I read Nickel and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich's account of poverty in America, that was an excellent book. This book by Linda Tirado is even better. Linda wrote a blog post about why people in poverty make the decisions they do, this post went viral and I read it. I was afraid this book would be a "total bummer" which is selfish, but the fact remains I don't like energy draining books that make me feel desperate about the problems in our world. Linda's book and energy is not draining, she is not a total bummer, she is electric and I hope everyone reads her book. It was a quick read and I'm a better person for having read it. Best of luck to Linda Tirado and I hope to read more from her. She is a great writer with a great voice.

... morerson that lives every day working two or three minimum wage jobs with no benefits gives us a great insight on what it is really like to be poor and have no real hope to get out of the situation. We so conveniently discount that segment of our population as being lazy and making poor decisions. Sadly, one third of our population now falls into this category and they are caught in a downward spiral that is impossible to climb out of. Politicians are so quick to want to cut benefits for the poor while giving the rich additional tax breaks. This book is a real eye opener and a must read for anyone who has ever passed by that dirty unkept person with a sign "homeless" and ignored them like they don't exist. They DO exist and they all have a story. It's time we start thinking about how fragile our financial situation is and how easily we could be in that same situation. Its time we pay attention to what is happening in our country, a rich nation, and realize that unless we speak up, we will soon have a two class system. There will be the rich and the then the rest of us, all living paycheck to paycheck and never being able to get ahead. less
