Book review: May I Have a Word?, by Caron Levis, illustrated by Andy Rash

Levis, Caron. May I Have a Word? Il. by Andy Rash. FSG, 2017. $16.99. unp. ISBN 978-0-374-34880-9. Ages 4-7. P9Q8

In mixed media, a blue kitchen fridge covered with magnetized letters and children’s drawings provides the background for an argument between the letters C and K when K accuses C of stealing all the words starting with the K sound. Other letters panic at the thought of losing the two letters, and U drops to the bottom of the refrigerator. N solves the day by featuring K in a story “about a knight who kept getting knots in his knitting.

Verdict: The book is an introduction to letters that sound alike as well as providing inspiration for storytelling about different letters.
