review 1: This is a haunting, beautifully written, highly unusual book. Each chapter follows a different character who has some kind of link to Tommy Smythe, who disappeared before the start of the book. Some characters are more closely linked to Tommy than others are, and the chapters are set up in different ways; in some chapters, a character is talking to the officer who is investigating Tommy's disappearance, and other chapters are told from a more removed narrative perspective and read like short stories that could stand on their own. Pages from Tommy's notebook appear between chapters. This book is not for everyone; it's very dark, for one thing, and the unusual format won't appeal to all readers. I loved it, though. I thought the chapters were fascinating and the format worke... mored extremely well for the nature of the story Lane is telling. I appreciate the way she develops a clear sense of her Texas, border-town setting throughout the book, and the ideas and people from this book will stick with me. A compelling, powerful debut. This would be a great book to talk about with a book club--there's a whole lot to process.
review 2: This is one of those novels that will stick with you for a long, long time. Many of the individual stories surrounding the disappearance of teenager Tommy Smythe from a small town are still rattling around my heart and mind, as is the interconnected whole and its themes of fate/destiny, choice/self-determination, coincidence/luck, and how our lives overlap with those of others around us in so many known and unknown ways. Unflinching in its examination of the darker sides of human nature, I highly recommend it for those readers mature enough to handle its gripping honesty. It will certainly leave them with something to think about. less

Really enjoyed the unusual structure and the interweaving narratives that came full circle.
