Films For Those Starting University

Going to university can be both an enjoyable and hectic experience. So when you need a break, look no further than our list of films which suit this new chapter in your life.

The Breakfast Club (1985)

A 1980s classic, The Breakfast Club finds a bunch of school kids from different ‘cliques’ thrown together during a Saturday all-day detention. All with their own preconceived ideas about the others in the group, they soon discover that they are not so different after all. The characters learn from each other, in the same way you will learn from the various people you meet at university. It’s a coming of age story with a killer soundtrack, filled with heartfelt and funny moments.

Legally Blonde (2001)

A favourite of the early 21st century, Legally Blonde tells the story of the ambitious Elle Woods as she goes to law school. Now, you may think this is an odd choice, but this film is full of important messages. Going to a new place, you will face a multitude of challenges and meet all kinds of people. It’s important to not judge a book by its cover, and never underestimate how strong your bonds can be with people that you least expected. At university, you are going to be thrown together with people you do not know, from your housemates to your course mates, so embrace this wonderful yet overwhelming time. Like Elle, you’ll have laughs and set-backs along the way, but through hard work it’ll all be worth it in the end.

Starter for Ten (2006)

Starter for Ten follows Brian through his first year at university. When his childhood dreams to be part of a University Challenge team materialises, Brian has the opportunity to get even closer to English and Drama student, Alice. The story is uplifting and funny; it’s cringe worthy but you feel for Brian as he deals with the intensity of the competition. Starter for Ten looks at Brian’s old relationships and new as he learns to find balance between his old home and his new one. As a fresher, you’ll see that university life isn’t always smooth, but it’s exciting and you will learn a lot. Set in the 1980s, this film always makes me smile and has a stellar cast, perfect for a rainy Sunday afternoon when settling in to university life.

Her plans for the future are suddenly disrupted when she meets David, a mysterious older man who takes her to exciting places to meet his fashionable friends. When the relationship becomes serious and draws Jenny’s attention away from her higher-education plans, a twist forces her to question the decisions she has made while seeking help from her favourite teacher. Sutter Keely is an outrageous and charismatic teenager who is struggling to write his personal statement for his university application. However, while suffering from his own internal demons and complicated home life, he finds solace in his classmate, Aimee Finicky, after their relationship blossoms when she finds him passed out on her front lawn. Going to university is daunting, but this film reminds us that there will always be people to help you, sometimes in the most unexpected places and when you don’t even realise you needed it. The Spectacular Now shows that we all make mistakes, and our decisions have consequences, but it is important to live in the now and to make every moment count.
