review 1: When Sarah Gratton’s fiancé leaves her for another woman, Sarah decides to take a teaching position in Italy, where she hopes to heal her broken heart. Her great-grandfather has fond memories of a “Lucia” who nursed him back to health and kept him hidden from the enemy when his plane crashed near her village, and Sarah decides – while she is there – to try and track her down. Conte Matteo di Serrone catches her trespassing (a misunderstanding) and although he intends to escort her off his property, he finds her disarmingly charming and invites her to stay for a meal instead. The two are obviously attracted to one another, but each is hesitant to get involved – Sarah, because of her recently broken heart, and Matteo, because he has been burned by women who o... morenly want to use him (or his family) for their own nefarious purposes (fame, money).Although there’s passion, most of the steamy scenes take place off-screen in the reader’s imagination (fine by me, as sometimes these can be over the top). The Italian setting, the descriptions of Matteo’s holdings (home and vineyard), and the meals that the couple shares are all quite delicious. [I particularly liked all of the references made to beekeeping – each of the families keeps bees and they treat them like relatives, keeping them up to date with their goings on.] You’ll want to visit and/or move to Italy having read this – possibly to meet your own tall, dark and handsome Italian lover.
review 2: It all started with a story her grandfather Lex told her, about him fighting in the war as a pilot. His plane had crashed, he was the enemy and a young beautiful woman named Lucia rescued him. She and he were lovers and when he finally went back home, he didn't know she was pregnant with his child.Enter Sarah ninety years later and she's off to Rome, in search of the place in the story when she runs into Matteo. Matteo is a Conte, he is full of sexy latin blood and Sarah can't seem to resist him. She tells him the truth, the story her grandfather Lex had told to her.Unfortunately someone Sarah trusted deeply ended up being conned out of the story by her boyfriend and he printed the story. Matteo, being used twice before, didn't trust Sarah and told her to leave Rome and never return. After being lovers Sarah is devastated but returns home and tells the whole story to Lex.Then Matteo arrives back on the scene apologizing and telling her that he loves her deeply. This story is beautiful, true love exists in this story. One look and you know. I fell deeply in love with the characters and after I was done reading, I sincerely wished for more. less
