review 1: the Brilliant World of Tom Gates is about Tom Gates. A boy who is more focused on doodling and biscuits than his school work. His life is full of beady eyed teachers like Mr Fullerman, the annoying Marcus Meldrew and grumpy sisters like Delia.Tom and his best friend Derek are in a band called Dog Zombies (remember the name, they'll be famous someday) and when Tom buys a copy of Rock Weekly, instead of buying milk, he realises that his favourite band, Dude3, are going to play a concert in his town.
review 2: Fans of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and The Popularity Papers will enjoy this one featuring fifth grader Tom Gates. With mixed media illustrations, large font sizes, and plenty of white space, the book is a quick and hilarious read. Not surprisingly, Tom... more is always at odds with his older sister Delia, he had aspirations to form a band called Dog Zombies, and he often invents ridiculous excuses for not turning in his homework. His teacher, Mr. Fullerman, is kind enough not to call him on his deceits, but something tells me he's wise to the kid. The plot of this title concerns Tom's plans to see his favorite band, but there are also all sorts of funny subplots and silly drawings typical of youngsters his age. There will be plenty more to explore in the future since Tom has a grandmother who believes in cooking creatively. This series is sure to be a hit with fourth and fifth grades who will also learn a little bit about schools in Britain while reading it. There's even a glossary to explain the unfamiliar terms. I'll definitely look for the other titles when they are available. less
