review 1: This book is a fine and dandy beach read, not a whole lot more. I enjoyed following Lois through her life, but the plot is a little too predictable. All these men throwing themselves at her, and she's a closed-off frigid workaholic who hasn't properly processed the loss of her father and doesn't realize how beautiful she is. It's been done. And then she opens a shop and within a year or so it's booming and she has to hire an assistant? I know it's a sub plot but, that was annoyingly too easy breezy and unrealistic. Any author who has had to work to get published for the first time knows that success takes a lot more time than that. There were so many ups and downs and the transitions felt a little fake and a little too much like a corny movie. Like suddenly this one senten... morece from the manual pulls her out of a deep depression and she turns it all around. Then she's depressed again, repeat. It's a cute theme and a relaxing read if you can look past these things.
review 2: This book pains me. Parts were repetitive. Parts were too long. Some were rushed so much that I found myself wanting more. There were characters that weren't needed. But. No matter how much I really wanted to hate this book, because of the cliche things in it (dead father, "ugly" main character, beautiful and sexy best friend, falling in love with the best friends older and sexy brother, utter hate of new stepfather, blah blah blah), I couldn't do it. And I was hysterically sobbing on the last, about, 5 pages. I wanted to hate it and I couldn't. I gave it 3 stars because of the things listed above, but this was a quick read for those who prefer them every once and a while. less
