review 1: I received this book earlier today, having won one of the Goodreads giveaways. I wasn't really expecting much of it but I really enjoyed the book for the most part! It didn't exactly have a fairy tale ending but it was realistic and I liked that. The only thing that kind of irked me was the graphic sex scenes that seemed very out of place from the novel. I've read scenes of this nature before but they've always been more tasteful and written just for the point of telling the story, not "exciting" the reader... one minute I felt I was reading a genuinely interesting historical novel and the next I felt I was reading some generic romance that was written only to describe sexual scenes to readers. But, when I got past those scenes, I truly enjoyed this book and Sophie was a v... moreery easy character to sympathize with.
review 2: Did Prince Lorenz Borghese REALLY write this book - I kind of doubt it. Saw him on the bachelor and he doesn't strike me as being able to write a historical romance novel. That said, what a horrible woman Pauline was in the book and I didn't like Camillo much either. Sophie should have steered clear of both of them once she was of age!! Had to laugh at one of Pauline's "cures" of eating 20 or more cloves of garlic a day - she must have reeked!!! less
